It was so much fun we decided to make videos of all of our favorites and ask our friends and families to make their top three dishes. When the leaves are all off, and the lawn mowing has stopped: its winter. Which means lean times for me. I love my winter soup because its cheap and easy. Each veggie costs about a dollar, so for ten dollars, I have at least a week of soup to eat!

I always make a base, and I always seem to make a really oniony base. I could learn a different kind, but it keeps me from getting the colds and flu's.

That's my base frying! I start with garlic, ginger, shallots, onions, and leeks, and I fry them in a little oil and water, til the onions go clear.

There's my slow cooker, it's almost overflowing!
Then I put the base in a pot with about 4 litres of water, and chicken broth powder (I'm totally not organized enough to make real chicken broth!), plus all the veggies I decided I wanted in there. This round is: potato, sweet potato, yam, cabbage, celery, carrot, and a whack of baby bok choy cos it was on sale. In the end I found it a little bland, so I added a chicken rice soup mix that I got at Shoppers for the right spice. Turn slow cooker to four hours hi.

I had this Butternut squash that I nearly forgot, so I sliced it in half, scooped out the seeds, an roasted it on a tray in the oven. I put half in after the soup was cooked, when I pieced the soup into batches to freeze or fridge. The other half of the squash is going into black bean burritos instead of rice!

I love soup!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4819653113248149245.post-65951973638223678912011-10-30T18:05:00.000-07:002011-10-30T18:05:29.677-07:00Crispy Chicken Wings in the Actifry

Here is the recipe. This was the first time that we used the Actifry. We liked these chicken wings but I think we want to try a dry rub next time. We kept them in for 45 minutes - 10 minutes longer than the recipe suggested. We didn't have an egg so we added more water. We worried about cleaning the machine but it washed up easy. I dipped my wings in Frank's Red Hot Buffalo sauce.
If you want to get the recipe that I used to make my Nasi Goreng! (Indonesian Fried Rice)

Yay! I made food again!! I made brown rice in the cooker on Monday before I went to dance. Then, when I came home I threw it in the fridge. (You have to use cold rice to make fried rice) Today, Wednesday, I skipped yoga and went to the Asian market upstairs at Seymour and Robson. I was trying to find oyster sauce and kecep manis - sweet soy sauce and after Googling a picture I found them! I like that grocery store.

I made some changes to the recipe. I didn't use onions - just cause I am not a huge fan. I added some frozen peas. I didn't use salt and pepper. I didn't have tomato ketchup so I didn't add that. I fried an egg for on top and I squeezed cock sauce all over it. (It was actually a bit clogged at the top and I squirt it all over my sweat pants and my arm!)

Here is the picture of my Nasi Goreng:

This was delicious!!! I made one mistake. I mixed all the cheeses in with the spinach. I was supposed to leave the feta out for the top layer. Instead of a plain layer of feta we had another layer of the cheese and spinach mixture. We also added some mozzarella to the top. We might increase the amount of spinach next time and try using fresh spinach as opposed to frozen. We could also reduce the amount of cheese... maybe. I liked the cheesey goodness!
I will let you know how it turns out.. and put up a picture!
I forgot to take a pic.. I just gobbled! It was really good. I used baby potatoes instead of onion. I turned the slow cooker to warm before yoga and added in fresh broccoli. I also started the brown rice in the rice cooker then. I used flour to whisk into some of the juice at the end and it did make it thicker.

One problem: I had an itchy forehead, eyes, and nose after. I don't know - could be the new seasoning salt or the chili powder. I haven't had either of those things before. I should check the ingredients of those two things. OR.. it could be all the chlorine from Sam's pool that I was sweating out at yoga... I guess I will find out tonight when I eat it again.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4819653113248149245.post-44763827329567287192010-09-27T18:37:00.000-07:002010-09-27T18:37:35.119-07:00Pasta e Fagioli!!!!HI! This is my first cooking video. I decided to make Pasta e Fagioli because it has a funny name. This is the first time that I have followed a recipe in my slow cooker and it turned out pretty good! I would like to thank Sophie for helping me get my groceries and my room mate Ian for inspiring me to use a recipe.
